Paul D. Cummings, Jr.
1956-2024
1956-2024
Log Cabin Republicans of San Francisco are sad to announce the passing of Paul D. Cummings, Jr. earlier this month.
Paul leaves a legacy of nearly three decades of volunteerism, activism, and trailblazing for the Log Cabin Republicans. As a member of the Log Cabin Republicans of San Francisco, Paul served several terms on our Board of Directors, including a stint as Chapter President. Paul was also very involved with the Log Cabin Republicans of California, and was critical to obtaining a first-time charter from the California Republican Party in 2015. A longtime resident of Oakland, Paul moved to the greater Phoenix area and was active as President of the Log Cabin Republicans of Arizona at the time of his death.
Beyond the Log Cabin Republicans, Paul made history in 2007 as the first LGBT+ person elected as a Republican County Chairman in California. To date, there have been three additional LGBT+ county chairmen elected in California. In 2008, Paul served as a local chair for the John McCain for President campaign. Afterwards, Paul was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Volunteers Committee for the California Republican Party, where he spent many hours mentoring and shepherding groups such as the Republican Veterans, the Hispanic Republicans, the Young Republicans, and the College Republicans.
Outside of politics, Paul was active for decades in the Rotary Club.
From 1978-1994 Paul served in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant while serving on the USS MIDWAY (CV 41). Notably, Paul was responsible for helping to evacuate Clark Airbase in the Philippines following the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.
A celebration of life is scheduled for January 11, 2025. For more details, contact [email protected] for more information.
